Understanding Pip Value
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard unit of price movement in forex markets. For most pairs, it’s the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For JPY pairs, it’s the second decimal (0.01).
Standard pip values (per standard lot)
- EUR/USD: $10 per pip
- USD/JPY: ~$6.74 per pip (varies with rate)
- GBP/USD: $10 per pip
- XAU/USD (Gold): $1 per pip (0.10 = 1 pip)
Why pip value matters
If you don’t know your pip value, you can’t calculate position size, stop loss in dollars, or actual P&L. Every trading decision requires knowing pip value first.
